Solar Wifi

Solar Wifi

May 17, 2007

Minnesota isn't known in the home tech world for lots, besides being cold and the home of Best Buy, but it might soon have something to brag about: the U.S.'s first solar powered, city-wide wifi network is going up in St. Louis Park, a suburb of Minneapolis.

The wifi will cost between $15-$20 a month, depending on service, which is comparable to the non-solar wifi service being put into place in neighboring Minneapolis. Issues about aesthetics have been raised, but it seems that the vast majority of the 400 16' poles will be in out-of-the-way locations and not in the way of people's views from their picture windows and in the middle of their lots. 200 of the 400 poles will be located at intersections, serving a dual purpose in many cases, by also serving as the stop sign pole.
